Care and Maintenance For Your Wooden Cutting Board

Having a wooden cutting board in your kitchen adds warmth and character, but it also requires a bit of care and maintenance to keep it in optimal condition. Here are some tips on how to care and maintain your wooden cutting board.

  1. Avoid putting your wooden cutting board in the dishwasher. The high temperature and humidity in a dishwasher can cause the wood to warp, crack or split. Instead, wash your board by hand with warm, soapy water, and dry it with a towel afterwards. Make sure to get rid of any food particles that might be left on the board.
  2. Keep your board well-oiled. Wooden cutting boards need to be oiled to nourish the wood and prevent cracking. Use mineral oil, which is food-safe and can penetrate the wood, unlike vegetable oils. You can buy special board oil from local kitchen supply stores, or you can click the link below for Amazon. I use Howards Butcher Block Conditioner whenever my board seems to look dry.
  3. Apply oil regularly. Depending on how much you use your cutting board, you may need to oil it every few weeks, or even more often. Apply the oil to the board and let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe off any excess oil with a clean cloth. This will keep your board looking shiny and new. A little goes a long way. Put a little on at a time to minimize waste.
  4. Keep your board dry. Make sure your wooden cutting board stays as dry as possible. Do not leave it soaking in water for long periods of time, as this can cause the wood to swell and eventually crack. Always dry your board before storing it.
  5. If the board requires, you can sand your board occasionally. Over time, your cutting board can become rough and worn. Sand it down with sandpaper to remove any roughness, before oiling it again. With light kitchen duty, you may not ever have to worry about this step.

By following these simple steps, your wooden cutting board will stay in great condition, and will continue to be a beautiful addition to your kitchen for years to come.
